    Contemporary scientific practice, new philosophical trends, and the empirical turn in the philosophy of technology, surpassing philosophical views of representationalism, offer man with new science and technology. But the digital technology extends the forms of practice from the realistic to the virtual, which, thereupon, changes the cognitive models of the science and technology. This transition makes the cognitive procedure of the science and technology into that of the describing, the constructive, and the virtual cognitions, pushing man's scientific and technological cognition into a brandnew step.

    Quantum theory and membrane theory indicate two kinds of typical descriptions of the world. The quantum description is quantity-based. This quantity-based and formalized description has come across the infinity problem hard to deal with besides incompatible with the theory of relativity which owing to, in the final analysis, the description in quantum mechanics is merely quantity-based, and the description in the theory of relativity is mainly shape-based. The membrane theory as a shape-based description has adopted the membrane limited size instead of particle, which makes our description to the world consistency. The shape-based description built upon the foundation of geometry will not only extend the function of describing the world, and provided the possibility for an unified description in different scale. It’s at least a kind of hopeful extension to describe the external world to develop the shape-based description.

    Using a home market economic model, this article explains the changing competitive balance between the U.S. and Japanese film industries. I test the hypothesis that the domestic movies' market share in Japan has decreased because consumer movie spending has increased more rapidly in the United States than in Japan. The results of using information from a database (1955-2000) of media industry development in the United States and Japan generally support the economic hypothesis.

The regression models show the quota system is not a significant predictor of the self-sufficiency ratio, suggesting the system may not be an effective mechanism to limit the number of foreign film screenings in domestic theaters.
