In Its Source in the Way from Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragons, the author said: “文之为德也大矣!”For this Chinese sentence, different scholars have different interpretations. “德”, in Chinese language, means "nature" or "feature", but in the mode of “X之为德”, it has been emptied, just for emphasis. We can say that “X之为德” has the same meaning as "X", only in that the former has more emphasis than the latter. There is the pattern of “X之为物” in ancient Chinese language. Under many circumstances, "X之为德" is equal to "X之为物", only that the former is more abstract than the latter. Therefore, in interpreting "文之为德也大矣", it needn't give any explanation to “德”, just saying in this way: "Pattern is very great indeed." If we interpret “德” as "pattern's function" or "pattern's nature", that is not proper.

The history of the ci study cannot go without detailed description of inheritance from elders. As far as the Changzhou school of the ci study is concerned, it plays a vital role in inheritance, with Zhang Huiyan as the "father" and Zhou Ji as the real founder. After that, it developed into two subschools. One is representative of Tang Xian, including Zhang Yu and Ye Yanlan, then passed on Feng Xu, Xu Ke, Chen Tingchuo and Ye Gongchuo. And the other consists of Duan Mucai and Wang Peng, through Kuang Zhouyi, Zhu Zumou, Wen Tingshi and Zhen Wenchuo, to Wu Mei, Long Yusheng, Xia Chentao and Tang Guizhang. All this inheritance in modern times, evidently, is related to learning, lineage, profession and region. While elders are giving a great influence on juniors in their interest, method and achievement, juniors are also, based on the teachings of elders, giving their innovation continuously. Generally speaking, the influence is more than the innovation, thus making little contribution to the modern academic thinking but no lacking of enlightenment. The instruction embodied in inheritance is significant to improve the moral quality and learning purification of contemporary scholars.
