Three Problems in Cultural Studies——Taking as the Study Case
Journal of Shanghai University (Social Science Edition)    2010, 17 (1): 5-17.
    Abstract1346)            Save

In China' s mainland, as a largescaled movement of learning and ideology, cultural studies didn' t commence actually until the late 1990s and the early 20th century. And up to 2004, there was a "boom of cultural studies", which still continues. Chiefly, there are two reasons for this: first, the requirement of system operation for research or academy; secondly, the stimulation of social reality. In a sense, the latter is more important and more complex. It was in this context that, in Shanghai, not only the research and teaching of cultural studies but also the accompanying academic system operation started out one after the other. In 2001, Shanghai University established the Center for China' s Contemporary Cultural Studies, which is the first institute of cultural studies in China' s mainland. And during the subsequent four years, the similar institutions were gradually established in all the other universities in Shanghai. Those scholars, who were interested in cultural studies and came from such circles as literature, history, sociology, anthropology, and mass media, were admitted into the institutions, but maybe there was an overlap. In the course of these studies, arise a series of problems both in theory and practice. The first problem concerns about the relation between cultural studies and existing university systems. On the one hand, cultural studies are against any systems; and on the other hand, China' s existing systems are relatively unchanged. Therefore, the scholars, while helplessly squeezing into the existing university systems, try hard to develop and maintain the "interdisciplinarity" of cultural studies, thus the "production mechanism of contemporary dominant culture" as well as the interactional relation between this culture and that period of the history of "socialism" being defined the main target of the current cultural studies in China' s mainland. If we want to outline this kind of methodology, the "double lines" may be proper, that is, the "critical analysis" and the "promotive intervention", or, borrowing from two political terms in 1950s, the "destroying" and the "establishing". These two are interdependent, supplementing each other. In the next place, it is by what means that we can, continuing to concern about the urban culture, pay more attention to the countryside culture so as to mend the relation between the teaching of cultural studies and the social improvement. Finally, it is how to maintain the native characteristics of cultural studies in China' s mainland. Of course, the most important for this is to face the Chinese daily experience and draw from the rich resources of the Chinese revolutionary ideology and practical history. In other words, it is by virtue of daily life experiences that we can inherit the rich memories of the "Chinese Revolution" and pursue for the oppressive structure of internal reality.

"In Itself" or "For Itself": Middle Class and Class Consciousness
Journal of Shanghai University (Social Science Edition)    2010, 17 (1): 18-28.
    Abstract1263)            Save

    "In Itself" or "For Itself":
Abstract: For the theories of middle class in Western countries, there is a presupposition that middle class, as a stratum or group that takes shape in the development of the Western industrial business and citizen society, has a similar self-assessment, value orientation, life style, psychological characteristic and market capacity, thus playing an important role both in market orientation and in the stabilization and development of society. This essay, instead of repeatedly considering middle class as the "stabilizer", "balance" and "buffer", takes a perspective of class consciousness and class responsibility. The author thinks that, since the transformation of modern society, the differentiation, combination and development of middle class has made itself full of contradiction, heterogeneity and complexity. At that time, it is not the "class-for-itself". But, with the development of modernization, and with the diversification stimulated by market economy of stakeholders, political aspiration and value orientation, middle class begins to change, not only becoming a complex variable for group consciousness and behavior orientation in social reality, but also turning into an important variable for the relation between the stabilization and development of social order. Moreover, with different political and cultural backgrounds of countries, it has different connotations and characteristics. Therefore, middle class can not form a unified class consciousness, nor hardly constitute a class of political maturity. If there is not a positive interaction and mutual configuration of state and society, and not a win-win cooperation of other classes, it is difficult for middle class to become an important function system in the sound operation and coordinated development of modern social order.

Conscience Mechanism in the Perspective of Evaluation Theory
Journal of Shanghai University (Social Science Edition)    2010, 17 (1): 29-44.
    Abstract1051)            Save

Conscience Mechanism in the Perspective of Evaluation Theory(School of Social Sciences, Shanghai University, Shanghai 200444, China)Abstract: Conscience, as a core concept in Kant's philosophical system, should occupy a prominent position in Kant's philosophy. This is because: first, conscience is "a judgment formed by one for self"; secondly, conscience is based on good will; thirdly, conscience produces respect sentiments for moral principles by way of compulsory consciousness. Hegel discusses conscience from these three aspects: conscience is "a universal self-reflection"; conscience is "an absolute selfconfidence within behavioral agents"; conscience is the "only thing restricting oneself". While human beings act as social animals, conscience is a psychological mechanism formed by the operation of social norms on human beings. Individual conscience is a kind of internalization, both of social basic norms and of social basic values. Therefore, conscience can be considered both as the social basic norms or social basic values of individual patterns, and as the individual patterns of social "conscience". The social norms in the pattern of conscience are not specific but basic, displaying social rationality and spiritual faith. Conscience has four levels: compassion, shame, humility and rightandwrong. And the last also contains two levels: the acceptance of facts and the pursuit of justice. Conscience works by way of emotion. Socalled "uneasiness of conscience" is actually "moral disturbance", because conscience takes peace as pleasure and uneasiness as affliction; In individual selfevaluation, conscience often works by way of uneasiness or condemnation, thus making the individual immersed in some sort of emotional pain. The uneasiness or condemnation of conscience within individuals actually embodies the uneasiness or condemnation of social subjects on individual behaviors. The evaluation activity carried by individuals with the standard of conscience is doublelined: both the selfevaluation of individuals and the evaluation of society on individuals, that is, the one of taking individuals' selfevaluation as a unique form. While the evaluation of society on individuals turns into individuals' selfevaluation, individuals take a unique form of selfevaluation to embody the evaluation of society on individuals. This is the theoretical evaluation mechanism of conscience uneasiness or condemnation. As for confession, it is a specific form of selfevaluation. And very often, it is by way of confession that conscience expresses uneasiness or condemnation. Many wellknown persons in history possess a deep sense of confession.

Chineseness and Taiwan Image in Qiong Yao Movies
Journal of Shanghai University (Social Science Edition)    2010, 17 (1): 45-54.
    Abstract1735)            Save

The influence of Qiong Yao' s film on Taiwan's film history has not been giving a full confirmation in critics. Also in the studies of Chineselanguage films, scholars' research for Taiwan's film history often shows a leap, directly from the early Taiwaneselanguage film through the healthy realist film to Taiwan's new film, ignoring Qiong Yao' s drama that has once created a boxoffice miracle in 1960s and 1970s. In fact, Qiong Yao's film is important, not only because it helps Taiwan' s film open a distinctive type of melodrama, thus inheriting a strong popular tradition of commercial films that has been developing since the incept of the film, but also because it interprets, by using a mode of popular melodrama, China' s traditional ethics, thus playing an enlightening, appeasing role in the society. It has always been the tradition of China' s film to trace the history of the Chinese cinema and combine the form of popular melodrama with the Chinese ethics, politics and cultural reflection. The usage of popular melodrama in Qiong Yao' s film not only displays its strong roots in traditional Chinese films, but also indicates its close relation to the traditional Chinese culture. Besides, Qiong Yao' s film, while describing the romantic love kingdom, also refracts Taiwan' s image of an era. In Taiwan' s film history, Qiong Yao's film sets off two longer viewingbooms. And in these two periods, its story background, character relationship, plot setting and so on produce relatively a definite change, which reflects the changing time of Taiwan's society and the changing idea of Taiwan' s people.

The Historical Footprint of China's Film Blockbuster Production
Journal of Shanghai University (Social Science Edition)    2010, 17 (1): 55-65.
    Abstract1274)            Save

The emergence of the "blockbuster" or "big film" and the birth of these two concepts can be traced back to the History of Hollywood in the mid70s of the 20th century or even earlier. After the Paramount Case was decided, the environment of film production changed a lot. Facing this situation as well as the universal coverage of the TV, Hollywood produced such films as "BenHur", "The Sound of Music" and "Cleopatra" in 1950s and 1960s, which were strategic products to compete, thus establishing a blockbuster pattern that is characteristic of wide screen, stereo, high investment, grand scene and superstars. Up to the mid70s, with the increasing importance of marketing and digital technology in the film industry, a film called the "high concept" by Justin Wyatt appeared. Since that, a commercial operation mode of the "big investment, big production, big marketing and big market" was determined, and was carried forward in such films of the "high concept" as "Jaws", "Star Wars" and "Jurassic Park". In China, the production of blockbusters is also vital for the system of the Chinese film industry. After a period of four phases, that is, the initiation in 1950s and 1960s, the allround development in 1990s, the international operation in the new century and the new development of mainstream culture, the production of China' s blockbusters has been steadily increasing and achieved excellent results. But, compared with Hollywood' s blockbusters of the "high concept", the insufficiency of the "big marketing" and the lack of high technique are two important factors constraining the development of China' s blockbusters. In the future, it is necessary for China' s blockbusters to attach importance to the establishment of core values, the diversified, multitype construction, and the application and development of digital hightech.

Discourse Construction of Mainstream Blockbusters and the Ecological Proposition of China' s Films
Journal of Shanghai University (Social Science Edition)    2010, 17 (1): 66-79.
    Abstract1167)            Save

The current blockbusters in China, viewed from the perspective of cultural ecology or ecological criticism, is no doubt able to get a more popular values and a more effective way of speech. And it is based on the theoretical premises of film ecology and ecological criticism that the relations can be put forward between mainstream and nonmainstream, blockbusters and small films, and production and consumption of mainstream blockbusters, and that it is expected to, on the level of active adaptation, coordinated interaction and trying innovation, search for mainstream blockbusters the rationality of existence and the basis for moving forward. On the whole, it is necessary to, in the active adaptation and mutual transformation of mainstream films and nonmainstream films, construct gradually a fair, balanced ecofilm in China. If nonmainstream films are ignored or eliminated, mainstream films will lose their healthy body and innovative vigor. Under the background of pluralistic globalization, and in the context of unique Chinese films, domestic blockbusters imply a large number of complex motivations, specific processes and rich details. Both simple argument of rightandwrong and abstract judgment of values are not desirable. It is the inescapable responsibility and mission for blockbuster discourses to have a specific probe into their living condition and ecological status. Correspondingly, mainstream blockbusters are not only to link themselves to China' s overall cultural environment of films, but also to have a common dialogue and exchange between politicians, entrepreneurs, scholars, media and audience, in order to, based on all this, have an innovation in the production and consumption of China' s mainstream blockbusters and make the Chinese film onto an ecological, balanced road of healthy development.

The Narrative and Ideology of Domestic Blockbusters
Journal of Shanghai University (Social Science Edition)    2010, 17 (1): 80-87.
    Abstract1516)            Save

As a special kind of cultural, artistic product, the film can not avoid its ideological characteristics. The question only lies in how to convey ideology. When domestic blockbusters try to, by way of dazzling visual spectacle and superstar lineup, stimulate audience' s audiovisual sensory so as to achieve ideological objects, we may ignore a fact that image narrative is the most effective means of conveying ideology. For the effective conveyance of ideology, more is completed by way of effective narrative. From the level of creation, if the importance of film narrative is ignored, it is possible for the film to become an ideological mouthpiece, thus being reduced to an abstract, didactic tool. Either from "Hero" to "The Promise", or from "Curse of the Golden Flower" to "The Banquet", all these domestic blockbusters, behind the narrative form of omniscient narrative or authoritative narrative, display a cultural connotation of "imperial" narrative or "divine" narrative as far as the text is concerned. "Assembly" not only means the transformation of theme or genre in domestic blockbusters, that is, the transformation from costume swordsmen to modern warfare, but also, in a narrative sense, displays an attempt by directors to break authoritative narrative, instead of concerning, from the perspective of civilians, about the fate of individual characters, thus developing a mode of the Chinese war film defined by conventional discourses. Very often, in China' s films, film narrative is not a simple narrative related to the film text but a reflection of film text on sociocultural Pantext. The domestic blockbuster marked by "Assembly",through the efforts of the film narrative, plays an important role in changing the paradox relation between ticket sale and mouth word, and commerce and quality. It has become the key to actually do so for domestic blockbusters to construct a positive, interactive relation between the demand of mainstream ideology, the need of popular cultural psychology and the expression of creators' image or narrative.

The Philosophical Basis of Marxist Aesthetics and Its Understanding of the Time——An Argument about the Debate on the "Aesthetics of Practical Existence"
Journal of Shanghai University (Social Science Edition)    2010, 17 (1): 88-106.
    Abstract1508)            Save

In recent years, a debate on "practical ontology" or "practical existence" has been going on in such fields as philosophy, aesthetics and literary theories, thus forming two kinds of clearly oppositional standpoints of actively promoting and firmly opposing, and main representatives including Zhu Liyuan and Dong Xuewen. The debate actually concerns about how to understand the essence of Marxism, and what kind of basis of Marx' s philosophy our aesthetics and literary theories should be based on. In the context of the time, the aesthetics of "practical ontology" or "practical existence" aim at, under the general background of the transformation of philosophical thinking today, getting through the interlinkages between "practice turning" and "existence turning". But Dong Xuewen' s expression of basic standpoints in the aesthetic debate of "practical existence" uncovers his deficiencies in major theoretical issues. Understanding of this point will be helpful in getting rid of misreading of Marx' s philosophy and aesthetics, which is, for a long time, enshrouded by the traditional thinkingway of metaphysics. In this way, we can reinterpret and reunderstand Marx' s practical viewpoint of aesthetics in the text of the time. By denying the aesthetics of "practical existence", Dong Xuewen puts forward his own understanding of Marxist basic principles, which is just a directrepeat or rereiterate of the official, orthodox Marxism of Sovietpattern. It is the thorough monism of dialectical materialism. From the perspective of ontology, its theoretical expression of primary substance or material uniformity, is actually a traditional material substance ontology; and from the perspective of epistemology, its theoretical expression of consciousness being the active reflection of the objective material world, is actually a correspondence epistemology of subjectobject dichotomy; and from the perspective of axiology, its theoretical expression of the objective reflection or recognition of  truth, is actually an objective, neutral, scientific positivism. As an inflexible theoreticalthinking or knowledgepatterns, Marxism of Sovietpattern parasitizes or roots in the tradition of modern metaphysical thought. Therefore,it is a duty for the theoretical scholar to get rid of the dense fog of metaphysics, and go further to get rid of the longterm shroud of Sovietpattern. And "practical existence aesthetics", just in this context, displays a unique theoreticalmeaning and contextualconnotation: really getting rid of the tendency of the practical ontology and the shroud of traditional metaphysics, and opening its theoretical context of postmetaphysics. The theoretical resources and basic ideas are to getting through the linkage in the theoretical horizon between "practical philosophy" and "existential philosophy". In detail, it tries to, between Marx' s practical philosophy and Heidegger' s existential philosophy, establish a sort of domain fusion in dialogue so as to display the implication of the time of "practical turning" and "existential turning" in the context of postmetaphysics.

The Achievement of Selecting and Saving the Edo Poetry in Dongying Poems
Journal of Shanghai University (Social Science Edition)    2010, 17 (1): 115-122.
    Abstract1310)            Save

Dongying Poems, compiled by a famous scholar Yu Yue in the Guangxu years of the Qing dynasty, is a largescale general collection of Japanese Hanpoetry selected from the Chinese perspective. The book has multiple meanings in history. On the one hand, it is the first anthology of Japanese Hanpoetry selected by the Chinese scholar in China; and on the other hand, it is actually the first official general collection in the Japanese history, not only of the earliest publishing date but also of the largest publishing scale. At the same time, Yu Yue writes a number of precise and appropriate comments. What' s more, by virtue of Yu Yue' s unique perspective, the book includes many excellent poems, which are unfortunately ignored by Japanese critics, not only at that time but also at the present. Especially, the book includes many excellent poems of the Edo Period still completely forgotten by Japanese. After the Meiji Restoration, because of Japan' s contempt for its own Han literature as well as other reasons, many collections of the Han poetry Yu Yue read at that time are now hard to find a trace. Therefore, Dongying Poems also plays a role in saving the documents of the Japanese Han literature. Even the Japanese scholar has to use it as the essential book for the research for the Japanese Han literature, not to say Chinese scholars. As the time goes by, this merit and significance of Dongying Poems will be even more clearly. Despite there are insufficiencies for compiling the book, the socalled shortcoming of the "selecting the improper poems", basically speaking, does not exist. Even as far as this is concerned, the book shows its excellence.

The Reflection and Choice of the Development in China' s Current Criminology Ontology
Journal of Shanghai University (Social Science Edition)    2010, 17 (1): 123-134.
    Abstract1325)            Save

China' s criminology displays a structural vacancy in fundamental tasks such as subject property, study objects and methods, as well as applied value. This congenital deficiency in the ontological construction of criminology subject has become a hidden danger for the development of criminology, not only making the study of criminology unable to meet the urgent demand of modern society, especially the crime control in China' s transition of society, but also producing a urgent sense of crisis in the circle of criminology. Therefore, in recent years, a deeper discussion has been made, which is both the reflection on the subject situation of China' s criminology, and the consideration of how to have its ontological construction in criminology for a period of social transition. And the reflection and consideration are inevitable in the disciplinary development. At present, it is vital for criminology to overcome the loose state of ontological study and establish a clear object of development of ontological construction. All these can help to understand and grasp, from a deeper level of subjects, the path choice of criminology in development.

Surpassing the Traditional: Constructing the Credible Media

Journal of Shanghai University (Social Science Edition)    2010, 17 (2): 5-19.
    Abstract1293)            Save

Nowadays, with globalization and informationization, mass media is increasingly competitive, which gives China' s mass media a severe test. But, however, for the influence on international public opinion, China' s mass media is very limited. There are four main reasons for this: (1) lacking a understanding or analysis of media institutions and policies as well as audience psychology in the Western countries; (2) having a weak capacity of media subject and a backward production of media content; (3) possessing a backward media mechanism of cultural industry and an improper structure; (4) being devoid of the brand awareness and competition sense of media content. According to many scholars, there are  such problems that need to be dealt with urgently in China' s foreign dissemination: first, how to guide public opinion outside China' s mainland so that the proper media subjects can be produced and opportunities can be seized to report highly political majoremergencies; secondly, how to avoid the negative effect on foreign media for such propaganda policies as promoting mainstream values and emphasizing positive publicity; finally, how to create a new content or form in an open posture for different countries of cultural background. In detail, there are following six problems for China' s mass media: credibility is so low that journalism is replaced by propaganda; policies and media philosophy lag behind; there are stereotyped structures and inadequate system supplies; the capability of resource integration is very low, lacking financing channels; multiple impacts and pressures at home and abroad are faced with; the irrational tendency to entertainment is expanding. Therefore, it is necessary for scholars to make a research from the following four aspects: the institutional transformation in the development of the Western media; China' s development strategies in the content industry of foreign dissemination; content innovation; the improvement of news credibility and media internationalization. All these have supplied a theoretical support and a policy reference for China' s media development in such aspects as global horizon, diversified structure and largescale industrial media.

Although, formally, euthanasia is similar to intentional homicide, they are quite different in nature. Euthanasia should not be taken as a criminal act. Based on the justification for inhibition of crimes and the justification for inhibition of responsibility in the mainland law system, this essay goes further to make an approach to China' s theoretical basis of the noncriminal nature of euthanasia. Judging by predominant law interest and purpose, or by social worthiness action, we can find a justification for inhibition of crimes in euthanasia. When we make an analysis of euthanasia actors by expectant possibility, we can not expect the patient' s choice of normative natural death or the doctor' s lack of sympathy in face of the patient' s extreme sufferings. Euthanasia is a helpless action, without expectant possibility. It is a justification for inhibition of responsibility. Euthanasia has a nature of noncriminal action.

This transformation displays the spirit beneficial to the accused person, and thus further increases its noncrime function. Correspondingly, the function of the derived principle for conviction and penalty according to law should also be transformed. First, the custom law should not blindly be excluded and its noncrime function should be integrated into the origin of the criminal law. Secondly, the analogy explanation should also not blindly be forbidden, and the analogy explanation beneficial to the defendant should be permitted. And at the same time, for the dilative explanation and the restrictive explanation, whether beneficial or harmful to the defendant, should be determined. Finally, in criminal law interpretations, the retroactivity should not be given all and singular. The retroactivity in criminal explorations harmful to the defendant should be prohibited.

Abstract: The significance and value for establishing a reporting system for family property are not only embodied in constitutional, administrative, criminal and civil laws, but also embodied in tax and social security laws. By doing so, we can, in a more clear way, define the property right, strengthen the civic consciousness of private rights, especially the consciousness of the property right, and set up the legal concept that is consistent with the market economy and with the harmonious society. At the same time, it is an important basis for each citizen and each family, not only in paying property taxes such as personal income, estate and bestowal, but also in access to social welfare and security. Therefore, it is also vital for promoting social equity and justice, and for protecting basic human rights of citizens. To establish and improve China' s reporting system for family property is a large, hierarchical engineering. In a recent time, the "Family Assets Reporting Act for Civil Servants" should be developed and implemented. And once the time is ripe, the "Basic Law for Tax" should be developed so as to regulate the behavior of citizens other than civil servants in reporting family property. In the process of implementation, it is permitted that provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities enact local laws or government regulations so that they can implement management respectively according different specific situations. After setting up basically a nationwide reporting system for family property, we should, in time, develop and implement the "Heritage and Gift Tax" and "Social Security and Welfare Law", and amend the "Personal Income Tax Law". All this may be the basic path of establishing and improving China' s reporting system for family property declaration system.

Use New Ideas to Promote the Cultural
    Development of Contemporary China

Journal of Shanghai University (Social Science Edition)    2010, 17 (05): 5-15.
    Abstract1191)            Save

The Chinese culture is now given a new consideration in such dimensions as national revival, state dignity, historical heritage and human brightness. At the present, there are following problems for China' s cultural development: lacking of understanding of the cultural role in the development of contemporary China; being unclear for the concept of the development of the mainstream culture; giving an emphasis on economic interests and a neglect for social benefits in such a way that the sustainable development of culture is affected; lacking of effective measures to support the development of folk culture, and thus producing its survival crisis. Nowadays, some developed countries have created a number of experiences in cultural development we can learn from: attach great importance to the cultural role in the development of social economy; shape the core values of national identity so as to form the dominant concept of cultural development; strengthen, by way of multidimensional art, the mainstream values so as to create a relatively free, relaxed environment for stimulating the creativity of cultural producers. In view of the above, China faces severe challenges in cultural development: being uncoordinated between socioeconomic development and cultural development; being incongruous between the higher cultural needs of the public and the diversity and richness of cultural development; being contradictory between ideology and consumerism; being unmatched between the historical requirement of highend cultural market and its policies; being discordant between the international trend of cultural development and the promotion of national cultural tradition; being inconsistent between the open requirement of cultural development and the security of national culture. Therefore, it is necessary for China to improve such aspects as cognition adjustment, ideology guidance, policy research, and cultural concept, and, based on these, give a reconsideration of cultural statues and role. That is: the equal importance of culture in national development; the guarantee of the harmonious development of society; the tie between the national solidarity and national unity; the engine of enhancing the national strength and competition; the source of international exchanges and human common values; the lubricant of the relationship between man and nature. In this way, the goals of cultural development can be further determined: ascertain the bedrock status of culture in social development; build a bigger platform for the development of cultural keynote; protect the nonprofit heritage of national culture; enhance the position of traditional culture; establish policies so that the conditions of folk cultural activities and cultural undertakings are created; plan the new measures of the development of cultural industries.

The Society of Risk: Are We Ready for It?
——The Thinking and Response on the Urgency of
National Social Education in the Period of Transition(1.School of Liberal Arts, Shanghai University, Shanghai 200444, China; 2.Center of National
Spirit and Quality, Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, Shanghai 200020, China)Abstract: In the process of global modernization, the significance and role of national social education in the world has become increasingly prominent. But, in contemporary China, social education, which should go hand in hand with school education and family education, falls into inaction for various reasons, and even loses weight evidently. This essay, from the perspective of multidimension, tries to probe into the causes and consequences of losing weight in social education from the source, as well as the possible countermeasures and paths, and improve the quality of the national response to the risk and promoting the construction of harmonious society, so as to ensure that the Chinese society transforming from tradition to modern can "go well all the way". Therefore, the author points out that, for the concrete practice of national social (or ethical) education, the first thing to do is attaching importance to pragmatism, that is, strengthening the education of social symbiosis to face the risk of social conflict; strengthening the education of humanistic care to face the risk of hightechniques; strengthening the education of modern environmental awareness to face the risk of frequent natural disasters. In all these kinds of education, a special attention should first be paid to cleaning or cutting the bad habits and potential regulations that may counteract seriously the positive education. Secondly, in the process of implementing social (or ethical) education, the content should be progressive and continuous, and the form should be varied and routine, and the goal should also highlight the compatibility, so as to be helpful in producing a "superposition effect" for the ideas and behavior of symbiotic human. Thirdly, in view of the objective facts of social division of work, for the demand of education, social elites should be higher than general public, so as to turn social elites into true "social examples". Finally, as an important part in cultural construction, social education should accompany the construction of new villages, small towns and modern communities, which have appeared since the inception of the new century, so as to achieve the combination of firmness and flexibility——the complementation of hardware construction and software construction.

Breaking with Old Ideas: An Untrue "Political New Year' s
Film" at the Later Period of the Cultural Revolution

Since the inception of the New China, the Chinese film has experienced numerous ups and downs. And the 60year historical picture of the Chinese film condenses a history of culture, thinking and struggle. Among the many controversial films, Breaking with Old Ideas, as the "political New Year' s film" of 1976 (Starting showing nationwide in January 1st), is an unforgettable film worthy of particular concern. In the book of Film History: an Introduction, Kristin Thompson and David Bordwell, two American film historians with the Cold War mentality, use a whole page to introduce this film, considering it "a drama about an agricultural college, illustrates how schematically Mao' s ideas were treated." Strange to say, 30 years later, from time to time, some people utilize the film' s educational thinking and political ideas to criticize the current educational chaos, which indicates that China' s education has almost gone into a dead end. While some propose the modern university' s "big buildings, great masters, and best environments", others use the film' s lines to yearn towards old idealism. For example, "Judging the quality of a school, we must see whether or not this school trains good students instead of seeing whether or not it has big buildings or firstlate professors." Moreover, many people give a positive judgment because the criticized phenomena in the film such as "peasants and workers can not afford university", "one cannot apply one' s education" and "the values of students collapse", seem to become living examples in the current time. Therefore, the author of this essay, who experiences the Communist Labor University of Jiangxi Province and witnesses the 30 years of education reform and film development, have a unique feeling for the film.

    Animated Films: Narrative and Ideology

Journal of Shanghai University (Social Science Edition)    2010, 17 (05): 54-60.
    Abstract1457)            Save

Either for animated films or for usual story films or documentary films, narrative is one of the basic, kernel topics. The development of narrative arts and techniques, often from an important aspect, reflects the course of film development. As far as China' s film is concerned, the issues of both narrative and ideology that is embodied as a cultural soft power, are worthy of discussing from these two levels of creation and research. But for the animated film, the nature of artistic creation is imagination, and is the narrative ability reflected in imagination by way of images, and essential innocence and child' s interest. The imaginativeness of animated films is closer to children' s nonlogical, nonconventional, nonlinear thinking, or, in other words, antiadult logical thinking. This way of thinking, to some extent, determines the external forms and narrative features of the animated film. In ideological demands, the animated film is clear to focus on the cultural connotation of common humanity, because children are main audience of the animated film, characteristic of less difference and more universality if compared with adults. The animated film needs more "edutainment" than the story film that takes the adults as the main audience, and, therefore, more effective expression of ideology through video and narrative images instead of simple moralizing. While it is not difficult to establish a view of value that can be recognized, it is also not easy to improve and strengthen the effectiveness of this view of value. If the desire to instruct is too strong and the mode of narrative is too straight to the theme, things will ultimately go to their opposites. This is just a big problem, which not only trouble the domestic animated film but also torment the whole Chinese film industry.

For a long period of time, there is a certain degree of habitual thinking of Orientalism in oversea scholars' research for China's film. As the first step to understand this issue, the cognitive bias in oversea films about China's or the Chinese images can be referred to. For example, in the documental usage of oversea scholars, some essays and monographs about Xie Jin's films often appear fragment citations, shielded allusion and unidirectional intertext choice, the common roots of which can be given an analysis by virtue of Edward Said's theory of Orientalism.

Modernization is a process of the redistribution and strategic adjustment of global resources. As far as Shanghai is concerned, after it obtains the minimum qualification and identity for urban competition, it opens for itself a channel to modern international resources dominated by Western civilization. Shanghai is able to become China' s contemporary metropolis that possesses the highest level of internationalization and urbanization, just because, in its every critical moment of development, it can absorb the philosophy, wisdom and spirit of the time, which is essential for China and the world. In every important phase, it is directly related to different forms of axial intelligence. Shanghai' s cultural center, which is established from its beginning to 1930s, is a cultural pattern of being most worthy of attention and study for further understanding how China' s civilization is melted into a new axial age of globalization. In the confliction between the East and West, the ancient and modern, Shanghai completes successfully a new spiritual awakening and creates a unique culture form, thus, in the modern abyss full of blood and fire, life and death, exploring a way of life and acting as a pioneer for China' s being admitted into the world' s civilization system of new axial age. And Shanghai, in the new axial age, opens directly the modern lifestyle and aesthetic taste. Shanghai' s cultural spirit and life style, in the aspect of promoting the transformation of China' s traditional values, daily lifestyle and aesthetic taste, can not be compared by any other regional culture in modern China.

Nowadays, the cultural studies of the European and American scholars have gone beyond the scholastic methods of research. They no longer consider the cultural studies merely as a research method or form, and, therefore, jump out of the endless stereotype of defining concepts. Especially, Ben Agger proposes decanonization and despecialization. Instead of turning the culture studied into a kind of empty methodology, he points out that there is no single form of the cultural studies and that the scholastic research method results in its departure from politics. All these cultural theories of "new lefts" in the European and American countries are instructive for China' s accurately understanding of what cultural studies is.

Mr. Dong Naibin' s "Two Great Traditions of Lyric and Narrative in the History of the Chinese Literature", published in Shanghai' s Social Sciences of No. 3, 2010, proposes a theory of "the old Chinese character is produced, evolved and developed for record and narrative", and gives some authentic examples. This theory actually responds the two sayings of the "selfexplanatory" and the "associative compounds" in Ban Gu' s "SixScript Theory". Dong' s theory also develops the interpretation of such configuration as the "associative compounds" in Xu Shen' s "SixScript Theory", thus providing the research for the Chinese character with a new perspective. Based on the previous theories, this author tries to give a short analysis of the inherent features of the Chinese character such as the pictographic meaning, the combination of sound and meaning, and the threedimensional narrative, so as to respond Dong' s theory and display the long tradition and deep root of the Chinese literary narrative.

This essay gives a comprehensive and systematic review, since 1979, of the translation and introduction, the overall studies and the case studies of the short stories of William Faulkner, the Nobel Prize winner, in China. Chinese scholars have translated and published 40 of Faulkner' s 129 short stories, the studies of which have obtained considerable scholarship achievements. However, most of the short stories haven' t been translated into the Chinese and haven' t been studied in China. Compared with the studies of William Faulkner himself abroad and the studies of his novels at home, the studies of his short stories in China still lag behind both on span and depth. Therefore, Chinese scholars should reinforce the translation and introduction of Faulkner' s short stories and Faulkner research achievements from abroad, broaden the research vision and explore the new research perspective of study to provide better service for the prosperity and development of the Chinese literary culture.

This essay, according to George Mosse' s theory of manly ideal, and taking as the study cases the three representative works of Horace Walpole, William Beckford and Matthew Lewis, gives an analysis of the male narrative strategy in the British Gothic novel. The authentic facts indicate that Horace Walpole, William Beckford and Matthew Lewis are queers, whose male identities have suchandsuch inadequacy, each displaying a tendency to homosexuality or bisexuality. And in the eighteenth century, Britain is dominant in heterosexuality. The homophobia prevailing in the society causes the above three authors to be in the closet, thus producing different degrees of repression in their psychology. Their Gothic novels are just a reflection of the repression, in a natural or unnatural way. In conclusion, the male narrative strategy in the British Gothic novel is the one of homosexual consciousness.

The "threediscourse" in the book of Zhuangzi, that is, "Yuyan", "Chongyan" and "Zhiyan", have a very important theoretical value, the essential meanings of which are as follows: (1) "Yuyan", as a kind of fictive words, displays externally a dialogue; (2) "Chongyan" is others'  words that can express the viewpoint of Zhuangzi himself; (3) "Zhiyan" is one' s own words directly describing or presenting things. The "threediscourse" is the classification of discourse from the dimension of Communication, being basically consistent with the classification of discourse from the dimension of paralinguistics. This fact indicates that Zhuangzi' s language concept, both advance and simple, should take an important part in China' s history of literary theory.

China' s Trend and Keystone of the Transformation of  Development Mode in the National Twelfth Five Year Plan

Journal of Shanghai University (Social Science Edition)    2010, 17 (06): 1-.
    Abstract1333)            Save

In the next five years, China will be in the crucial stage of the second transformation and reform, which takes the transformation of development mode as the main line. The transformation and reform of this time bear a strong imprint of the times, not only demanding China to regard the urgency of the transformation of development method from the variety of external and external markets, but also requiring China to understand and grasp the realistic need and basic trend of the transformation of development mode from the big trend of structural change in domestic demand. At the present, the basic trend of structural change in China' s social need is mainly marked by the development from living necessity to enduring consumables, and from private product to public product, and from substances to humans, the foundation of which lies in China' s starting to enter into the new stage of development type, and the essence of which lies in the basic need of human' s own development. The transformation of social need structure inevitably requests the corresponding change of development mode. Generally speaking, as the historic starting point of the second transformation and reform, the National Twelfth FiveYear Plan concerns the crucial five years of achieving a historic change for reform development and requires urgently to carry out the "four big changes": the change from investment dominance to consumption dominance; the change from industrialization dominance to urbanization dominance; the change from the shortage of public product to the equalization of basic public service in urban and rural areas; and the change from middle or high carbon economy to low carbon economy. In order to realize these changes, the most important is the transformation of government, that is, a doctrine of GDP increase being abandoned by government in such a decisive way that the following can be brought about: the change from the "economy growth" to the "economy development"; the change from the "nationwealth priority" to the "peoplewealth priority"; the change from the "making a big cake" to the "sharing a big cake"; and the change from the "profitmaking" of stateowned capital to the "public welfare" of stateowned capital.

One of the symbols of the firstrate university in the world is to own numerous winners of the Nobel Prize for natural science. As long as we trace the personal experience of the winner of the Nobel Prize for natural science, we can get a fact that these science elites, before getting a prize, accept their high education, including working and obtaining the degrees of undergraduates and postgraduates, almost in the firstrate university in the world. And a survey of their workingsites for researches also shows that they are highly concentrated in the firstrate university. This essay, by analyzing the general education, the integration of scientific study and postgraduate training, the subject of superiority, and the highquality teaching faculty, all of which are characteristic of the firstrate university in the world, discloses the unique pattern and mechanism of nurturing creative talents in these universities, describing in these universities, how the winner of the Nobel Prize for natural science is trained and molded step by step. And the author, by drawing on the successful experience of the firsrate university in the world, has a full discussion of the basic reasons, faced problems, existing differences and achieved paths of China' s founding of the firstrate university in the world. He holds that, compared with the firstrate university in the world, China' s difference of famous or key universities not only embodies some of internationally accepted reference data, but also displays the shortage of the topgrade scholar and master who enjoy prestige in the world, the absence of the distinguished subject of specialty and superiority, the scarcity of the highlevel achievement in originality, the student' s inadaptability to the demand of social, economic development, especially the dated running principle, running pattern and management style. Finally he points out that, by reform and innovation, China will break the old running, administrative mode, and realize the greatleapforward development. It is quite possible, in contemporary China, to found the firstrate university in the world. China will definitely produce the firstrate university in the world which possesses its own winners of the Nobel Prize.

Song Wei' s "The Philosophical Basis of Marxist Aesthetics and Its Understanding of the Time: An Argument about the Debate on the 'Aesthetics of Practical Existence'", in order to retort Mr. Dong Xuewen' s arguments, twists the "thoroughgoing materialism of monism" into the "Marxism of former Soviet mode". This saying has a lot of theoretical loopholes. Marxist philosophical foundation is dialectical materialism, historical materialism and practical materialism. And practice must be divided into idealism and materialism, and into dialectics and metaphysics. As one of the creators of existentialism, Heidegger has a political identity of the key figure of the Nazi. He wants to guide Hitler as the fascist leader in philosophy and agitates for, by war, winning over the "British and American democracies" and the "Russian communism". He advocates using metaphysics to support the battles for governing the world. He publicizes Nazi' s ideology and etatism. Mr. Song Wei asserts that Marx should have a metaphysical dialogue and integration with Heidegger. Judging from the theory, we hold that Heidegger doesn' t entitle and also doesn' t match to have a dialogue and integration with Marx. The wheel of history rolls on. We insist on and develop Marxism. We put forward the scientific concept of development. We can' t tolerate Heidegger' s "metaphysical rewriting" Marx' s philosophy.

As an epitome of the Western contemporary culture in the area of transAsia, South Korea' s religious films continuously strengthen their national subjectivity and emotional value, the diversified aesthetic form of which provides a visual field of comparative study.

The development of films has always been related closely to the progress of technology. While the film is the combination of art and technology, the progress of technology inevitably gives a large influence on the artistic film. Every big leap in the film history accompanies with the progress of technology. In recent years, with the rapid development of technology, the influence of technology on films is more evident, thus giving some impact on the traditional film aesthetics. Digital imaging techniques make the connotation of the film assumption changing greatly, being a further breakthrough in the restriction of the material reality subjected to by films. The year of 2009 is considered as the "first year of 3D", but, as far as the current 3D film is concerned, either image or performance or narrative levels appear a step backwards on the esthetics. On the one hand, the digital image makes the film become a language; and on the other hand, hightech produces a large influence, not only on the big screen but also on the small screen. But, due to the birth of the film of mobile phones, the film form is expanded.

Ban Gu' s poems about history, judging from a positive viewpoint, feature a strong image. According to historical records, Ti Ying' s story is very likely to be one of the picture stories Ban Gu often sees. With it, his poems have a strong correspondence. But, later, in the poems about history of Ruan Yu and Wang Can, the narration of the plot seems not to be attached importance to. While the image weakens, the poet' s emotion is highlighted. This tendency is most obviously displayed in Cao zhi' s "Three Goods", which proves that the poem about history is going towards the lyric.

    Observing Semantic Cognition from the

    Abstract1277)            Save

This essay aims to explore the meaning system of the body words that are called metaconcepts in the language. By a group analysis of the meaning of body words, a rule can be discovered. Owing to the operation of the cognitive principle of body experiences, the derivative ability of the words concerning "head", "trunk" and "bowels" of human body gradually decreases, displaying a tendency from strong to weak. This fact indicates that meaning as a cognitive one, based on body experiences, and taking comparability and relativity as a joint, is realized by these two cognitive ways of metaphor and metonymy. This also goes further to validate the theory of polysemy in linguistics, which considers the formation of polysemy as the result of human' s cognitive thinking of metaphor and metonymy. But, very often, the universal regulation accompanies with the individual difference. The author finds that "heart" as a body word is an exception. Although it is an inside organ, it has a lot of transferred meanings. By an analysis of the cases concerning the meaning distribution of "heart", a further conclusion is drawn. Meaning is not only rooted in the human experience but also subjected to the cultural mode. It is a cognitive mixture based on the body experience and the cultural model. Therefore, one cannot get a whole picture of the semantic system unless he explores the meaning from a cognitive perspective.

The Intermediation Field in the Community and the
    Construction Principle of Trust Mechanism
    JI Kun
Journal of Shanghai University (Social Science Edition)    2010, 17 (06): 126-138.
    Abstract1165)            Save

The theoretical frame provided by Bourdieu' s field theory is the relation between human and structure. This theory tries best to seek, between the activity of human and structure, for an interchangeable agent, and, by way of field, habitus and various capitals, explore the mystery of social practice. For Bourdieu, field is a social space characteristic of relative independence, which finds expression in possessing its own operational logic and rule. This essay takes Bourdieu' s field theory as the theoretical tool to analyze the intermediation field in the contemporary city community because the theory and the problems here have a "joint". The socalled intermediation field in the community means the concrete space of the community intercessor' s activity, which consists of such three elements as intercessor, organization and activity. In this study, intermediation field is not only the concrete geographical district but also the concept functioning analysis and research. The author, in using the field theory to interpret the related questions, carries on a "reformation of community intermediation". On the one hand, the community space for intercessor' s activity is considered as a field, that is, intermediation field; and on the other hand, the intercessor' s quality is regarded as a habitus, that is, intermediation habitus. And, for the intermediation system in the community, the core mechanism is trust mechanism. In the process of the operation of intermediation system in the community, intermediation field and trust mechanism are also interactive. Trust mechanism plays a very important part in finishing the interaction between the subjects of intermediation, and also in simplifying the process of solving community disputes. It is influenced by the macrostructure in the society and the mesostructure in the community, which is brought about through the community intercessor' s activity of the specific field in the process of intermediation. Not only is the construction of trust mechanism influenced by the intermediation habitus of the community intercessor, but also the interaction between the community intercessor as the trust subject and the interceded person has an important influence on the formation of trust. While the trust of the interceded person in the intercessor results in the cooperation in the intermediation process, the cooperation goes further to strengthens the trust. The author holds that, by an analysis of the above relations and interactive processes, the construction principle of trust mechanism in the community intermediation can be achieved,in detail, including the selection of the community intercessor, the construction of system itself, the cohesive mechanism of court litigation, and the establishment of trust environment in the community. In this way, the construction of trust mechanism in the community intermediation can be promoted, and the intermediation system in the community can be further developed.
