Abstract:

Many scholars have reflected upon the relationship between language and power, which has so far attracted increasing attention in such disciplines as translation studies, sociolinguistics, social and cultural studies, and among the representatives are Michel Foucault and Pierre Bourdieu. In Language and Symbolic Power, edited by John B. Thompson and translated into English by Gino Raymond and Matthew Adamson, Bourdieu not only deeply explored the symbolic power, but also profoundly analyzed the operation of language as political practice in the process of constructing and maintaining authority, inculcating knowledge and belief.
