"Film Propaganda" and "State Construction"——The Development of National-Government Films from 1927 to 1949
    LI Dao-xin
Journal of Shanghai University (Social Science Edition)    2013, 30 (1): 1-18.
    Abstract1172)            Save
From 1927 to1949, the National Government tried to promote the nationstate building by the ideologies and strategies of "Three People's Principles", "Nationalism", "Fighting the War and Building the Country" and "CounterInsurgency general mobilization". During this period, a group of Nationalist Party officials, intellectuals and professionals from different fields laid an important foundation for the film communication of National Government through various ways of mail declaration, lectures, article publishing and personal practice. Meanwhile, the National Government and its related departments and organizations at all levels released letters, rules, creeds and proposals on film censorship, literature and art award and cultural development and literature and art propaganda and established Film Censorship Committee, Film Guidance Committee and related rules, regulations and standards. Through all these measures, the National Government intended to selfcriticize the feudal ethics of national films, boycott the humiliating ways to China of European and American films, guard against the "revolution" thoughts of Soviet Union's films and eliminate the "class" consciousness of leftwing films and exercise the central government's missions and responsibilities in film communication with the positive attitudes of "party education" and "cultural control". Due to various reasons in political, military, economic, ideological and cultural aspects, the film communication system of National Government failed to reach the expected depth, breadth and efficiency.

    Why is "Happiness" Discussed?

    Abstract2111)            Save
In recent years "happiness" has drawn much attention from Chinese and international society, but the reason for these discussions tends to be neglected. The root of such focus on happiness and its perception is actually deep in value crisis. "Happiness" as a popular research object of capitalist economic studies, especially of modern western mainstream economics, is also a concept of political economics. The perception of happiness in contemporary China has experienced two distinct stages, so the discussion of it cannot be intensive enough without consideration of the history of modern (revolutionary) China.

Paradox of Happiness in the Context of Materialism: Characters of Metropolis Buddhism in Shanghai

With the highspeed social and economic transition in Shanghai, the new MiddleClass and Elite stratums have acquired considerable wealth and social status, and their strong "impulse to pursue material interest" has been satisfied during the past 30year reform and opening up. Against the background of rapid social change, however, they now find themselves confronted with new psychological problems including the confusion about value in keen competition and the loss of goal in wealthy life, which have largely influenced their measurement of personal "happiness". Suffering such psychological crisis, they start to try some experience of religion such as Buddhism. Nevertheless, their blind involvement in religious life is not only secularized and pancultural but utilitarian and superficial, which are also the main characters of metropolis Buddhism in Shanghai.

China' s Reform and Faith Transition
    LI Xiang-ping
Journal of Shanghai University (Social Science Edition)    2013, 30 (1): 52-66.
    Abstract1009)            Save
While bringing impressive economic achievements, the past 30 years of reform and opening up have also drawn much discussion and concern on faith problems. Based on but different from traditional religious studies, this paper replaces the word "religion" with the concept of "faith" and reviews China's reform and opening up from the aspect of faith sociology. It is argued that the occurrence of three belief trends in current China, which respectively advocate national populism, nationalism and party fundamentalism, is basically due to the failure of faith transition while economy prospers. Such a bottleneck problem in contemporary Chinese reform is rooted in the fact that the belief mode of a revolutionary party has not realized its transition to that of a ruling party, so it is hard to unify beliefs through constitutional democracy. In this sense, the basic problem of China's faith is about the core faith of public power. When public power is disenchanted and rationalized, the national belief of law and constitution is constructed and the model of "belief politics" is broken, faith transition will become the inner power to promote social and cultural development as well as further reform.

By comparing related articles in Education Research and Harvard Education Review of the past 17 years (1994—2010), the paper discusses the differences of educationequity focus between China and America. Statistics indicate that both of the two countries attach much importance to the issue of education equity, but, due to the gap in terms of development level and culture background, their research focuses differ significantly. While China emphasizes rural education and college entrance examination system, America sheds more light on racist, women's and special education. As to methodology, China tends to carry out policy review and macroexamination, but America always conducts policy investigation and microteaching research. Based on these findings, some implications and suggestions can be drawn from the present study to promote the development of education equity in China.

The Inverted “U-shape” Performance Pay Pattern in Research-Oriented Universities:
The Impact and Optimization of Hierarchical Pay Structure

    Abstract1297)            Save
Indications show that the current pay practices of university which is researchoriented is difficult to adapt to the strategic needs of building an innovative country. Through modeling and system simulation, this paper reveals that performance incentives have a doubleedged sword effect, and the best pay structure of s lies in maintaining a balance between fixed pay and flexible pay ratio of about 7/3, in order to effectively balance the “incentive effect” and “crowdingout effect” of the performance pay. Considering the reform of income distribution of institutions which is struggling to put forward, this paper finds that the post performance salary system itself is rational. However, the current pay level does not reflect the characteristics of human capital and post properties, so that the university pay mode of professors in China is suffering from the plight of the system: the acquiescing or lack of effective regulation to “outside system income” caused the upside down of pay structure. This paper argues that it is better to strengthen the functions and proportions of basic performance pay, improve pay structure, and urge the change of compensation policy curve from a steep type to a flat type on the basis of improving professors’ pay level, rather than correcting the distortion of performance assessment information with huge costs.

Literary narrative is not only a special way to express feelings but represents the spirit of a nation as imagination community. Both the language and style in literature show cultural identity, and identity can be fully reflected in literature and related cultural aspects.

On the Industrial Logic of Film as Art

Journal of Shanghai University (Social Science Edition)    2013, 30 (2): 11-21.
    Abstract1207)            Save
The general logic of art creation, dissemination and reception is not about commodity but about spirit, because art is a manmade spiritual world unavailable for material exchange. Comparatively speaking, the logic of art marketization and industry has deviated into the logic of paradox. The paradox lies in that human beings create art for spiritual communication rather than for commodity exchange, but such "psychic" art solely serving spiritual exchanges, since human commodity exchange took place, has deviated into a commodity equivalent. Film is a modern spiritual world primarily supported by capital; therefore, the industrial logic of film as art is a special capitaldriven logic about film production, circulation and consumption. Capital control is not only the necessary condition for art industrialization but the characteristic principle of survival that is "inherent" of film. In film researches, the term or concept of film industry fully reflects the dialectical logic of its own. The film industry chain cannot develop without creative ideas. In a certain sense, "creative idea" is a concept "transfer" of "innovation" in cultural industry, which is more about ideology and thus given the new name. Because of its broad market, rapid circulation, rich information and visual display, film is the industry that values creativity most. The difference between film creativity and other art innovation is that the former is more controlled by capital.

Regarding the four forms of poetry (verses, ditties, odes and songs) as orthodox representatives of Chinese literature, previous works on Chinese literary history tended to focus on the lyricism tradition of Chinese literature. Such interpretation and description of Chinese literature, however, are revised in A Study of the Narrative Tradition of Chinese Literature, whose author believes that the two traditions of Chinese literary history, namely lyricism and narratism, should be both covered in a book on Chinese literary history. This paradigmatic shift is significant, which means a fundamental change of literaryhistory evaluation from monocenter to dualcenter. In other words, the basis on which Chinese literary history has been constructed is radically changed.

The ideal music is a balance of the "internal" meaning and the "external" form. By discussing the basic connotation of ideal music, the free essence of music and free principles of perceptual factors, the article probes into the relationship between subjectivity and music and argues that music is a main way to achieve subjective freedom.

"Deverbalization" is a crucial stage in terms of Paris School's interpreting process, also a controversy in interpreting research. The study of bilingual memory representation brings logical links among bilingual proficiency, learning backgrounds and strategies and translation processing routes, which provides a new perspective to the nature of "deverbalization", the differences in accomplishment and the ways to realize it. Firstly, regarding the nature of "deverbalization", it is essentially a conceptmediated processing route, whose realization is restricted by interpreters' bilingual memory representation. Accordingly, transcodage or formbased interpreting is a wordassociated processing route. Secondly, bilingual memory representation models can explain the coexistence of "deverbalization" and transcodage, as well as the extent to which different types of interpreters accomplish deverbalization, which can also be regarded as alternatives to the Triangle Interpreting Model of Paris School. Finally, by analyzing the factors influencing the realization of deverbalization in the perspective of bilingual memory representation, the paper proposes that interpreting training should give priority to the optimization of trainees' memory representations through language enhancement and raising their awareness of flexibly selecting the proper processing route according to the given situation, which serve not only as effective means of accomplishing deverbalization, but also constitute an essential part of undergraduate and preliminary phase of post graduate interpreting teaching.

Bearing discrete imagination like those mandarin films in Hong Kong and Taiwan during the 1950—1970s, Ang lee' s films try to attract Chinese people all over the world through the construction of cultural China. As a cultural community independent on regions and politics, cultural China is represented in Ang lee' s films by distinctive culture symbols, reoccurrence of panChina space and depiction of panChinese fathers. Essentially speaking, the imagination of cultural China can be viewed as a kind of power discourse as well as a cultural and political tool. It is the way in which Lee communicates with both other cultures in the multicultural world and with Chinese regional cultures of the mainland, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Therefore, the Chinese imagination in Ang Lee' s movies not only explores the cultural differences between China and western countries but also tries to go beyond those within China. Although it means Ang Lee' s movies have to construct a kind of generalized cultural imagination, but their production and reception show that the imagination of cultural China cannot separate itself from the diversified and differentiated Chinese identity and experiences.

It is expected that we can, to some degree, solve the confusion in theory and practice as well as unify the understanding of strategic emerging industry. In this way, the intrinsic mechanism of strategic emerging industry can be explored, which ensures the industry to be cultivated and developed.

The injustice in the case of "Hu Feng' s counterrevolutionary cliques" has been commonly agreed on since China' s reform and opening up, but, due to the impact of some habitual thoughts, Hu Feng' s literary theory is still considered as wrong for its difference from mainstream ideology. But a theory should be judged by practice rather than by another theory. Hu Feng' s literary theory, which supports Lu Xun' s literary views and carries forward the culture spirit of May the Fourth, has greatly contributed to the development of new Chinese literature and proved through the past decades more reasonable and beneficial than the mainstream one. Although Hu Feng was overthrown as a person, his theory has been borrowed by many writers while seeking for the way to develop literature and art. Therefore, Hu Feng' s literary theory is of much practical value and needs new illustration.

Han Zhi, which describes novelists according to "how academic their works are and on which are their works based", views novels from the academic, rather than the literary or stylistic, perspective. Comparatively speaking, popular novels, which depend on storytelling skills and strive to be aesthetic and amusing, are considered as with more stylistic characteristics. In fact, there is no absolute split but many similarities between academic and stylistic novels. The study of Chinese traditional novels, which has been made complicated by the collision and overlap between the two research perspectives, should be carried out with respect for history and efforts to reveal how novels were actually understood by ancients.

Aestheticization of Everyday Life from Leisure

From the leisure point of view,"Aestheticization of Everyday Life", whose essence is the leisure of everyday life, enjoys certain rationality but suffers much blindness. The intense debates on it in the contemporary circles of Chinese literature, aesthetics and culture are actually rooted in the misuse of aesthetic concepts. Aesthetics is the highest level of leisure; the current everyday life is of leisure, but it is too early to be affirmed as aesthetic. Inspired by the debates, we should adhere to the aesthetic orientation of leisure and try to improve everyday life leisure to be aesthetic.

Functions of Criminal Second Instance Procedure in View of Review Manner:
With Special Regard to Article 223 of China' s New Criminal Procedure Law
    LIU Mei, GENG Zhen-Shan
Journal of Shanghai University (Social Science Edition)    2013, 30 (3): 131-140.
    Abstract1138)            Save
Review manners have a natural connection with the functions of criminal second instance. The balance of criminal second instance functions is reflected by the design of review manners, and the practical application of review manners influences, even determines, the actual status of second instance functions. The new Criminal Procedure Law keeps the complete review principle, which indicates that there is little adjustment in the area of second instance functions; however, the original provision of review manners is changed, the result of which is that opening a court session is no more a fundamental requirement. A gap emerges between the expectation of second instance functions and the review manners. According to the orientation of criminal second instance functions, when the review manners are applied in particular cases, the following aspects should be attached importance to: strictly qualifying the situations where opening session is not required, regulating the court' s discretion in choosing review manners, as well as guaranteeing the quality of opening session.

Problems and Solutions for Public Participation in the"We Media"Era
——A Case Study of 2012 (Rural Development Institute, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Beijing 100732)Abstract: 〖WTBZ] In the "We Media" era, social mobilization works in a way that facilitates wider social participation in group events, however, due to its features of communication, "We Media" also presents new problems for public participation, which include abstract anger and collective revelry, the "unstructured" state under populism, and the irrational disruption in social discourse and activities. To reshape orderly political participation from the citizens, the government should not only have wisdom in governance, but also adopt the new mindset that is responsive to the social development. To cope with the problems of public participation in the age of "We Media", the only possible choice is to establish and perfect institutionalized rights protection mechanism, facilitate the smooth operation of the mechanism that ensures free expression and protection of the citizen' s interests, and to enhance the negotiation capacity of the vulnerable groups in interests synthesizing and policymaking.

It has become an important theoretical and practical project in China' s political development to increase the channels for political participation, encourage effective political participation, improve the systems of political participation and to promote more orderly political participation by the citizens. Political participation involves action or behavior on the part of the citizen or citizen groups to influence the decisionmaking, formation, operation and regulation of the political system. Orderly political participation is to affect the decisionmaking and running of the political system by the citizen or citizen groups in a legal way and through institutionalized channels for political participation. Orderly political participation should be lawful, orderly, rational and moderate, which are the four criteria for evaluation.

Ingmar Bergman:An Image Poet Nurtured by the
Inspired by the western cultural ideal of a perfect balance of the Hellenic and Hebraic traditions, Ingmar Bergman has explored a series of intensely religious and metaphysical themes in his films and developed a set of incomparably rich interpretations with his remarkable use of the language of images. For a deeper understanding of his works, it's necessary to adopt a broader cultural perspective and be aware of the cultural traditions of Hellenism and Hebraism that have both influenced Ingmar Bergman. As an artist who enjoyed a happy childhood and famously "based all creations on childhood impressions", Ingmar Bergman has been receptive to various cultural traditions and is highly eclectic in his art. Moving beyond the Christian concept of "sin and punishment", he strives to integrate "consciousness" with "conscience", and "knowing" with "doing" with a view to unifying life and art and combing reason and faith for a common goal. For the development of individual soul, Bergman embraces the existentialist stance and advocates a proper fusion of the Hellenic and the Hebraic in a person. His films, stylistically described as "excitement in serenity", bring together the aesthetic and the religious, the artistic and the sacred in a state of harmonious interaction.
