China’s economic transition and upgrading is faced with an important historic turning point as the pressure of economic downturn increases and the trend of economic structural upgrading starts formulating. The question lies in that due to the changing profound and complicated international and domestic development environment, the time and space for transition and reform is increasingly constrained. It becomes a historical task of transition and reform and grand challenge for China to shift from an industrial nation to a servicesoriented nation by 2020.

Ruling the country by law is first of all ruling the country according to the Constitution. The base of the rule of law is sound laws, its pretext is constitutional governance and its core is the restriction public powers. The CPC’s leadership in the rule of law means that the Party leads the people to formulate the Constitution and laws, and takes the lead to believe in and abide by them. The construction of lawruled country starts from constitutional bases and principles. The ways and measures of realizing the rule of law include perfecting the socialist legal system with Chinese characteristics and with the Constitution at the core so as to establish China’s “Sunshine Law”, fortifying the implementation of the Constitution, enhancing and improving the constitutional supervision over public powers, further weakening the administrative intervention in judicial system and ensuring the independence of the collegial panel. It is essential to enhance the checking system of the National People’s Congress against any constitutional violations, to establish and perfect the investigation and punishing system against constitutional violations and to increase the supervision over organs of public powers. All of this is an important part of the reform of legislation, law enforcement and judicial system, and necessary requirements for achieving ruling the country according to the Constitution, upholding the constitutional authority and adhering to the paramountcy of the Constitution.

Oil and gas resources, as the core of world energy consumption, possess both economic and political value and profoundly influence the development of contemporary international political and economic relations. China and Russia are major world energy import and export country respectively, and their game in the area of energy cooperation not only exerts great influence on bilateral political and economic relations, but also on geopolitical and economic patterns in Northeast Asia, Middle Asia, Europe and other related areas. “Shale gas revolution” will promote the adjustment of world energy pattern and geopolitical and economic pattern on one hand, and affect to some degree SinoRussian energy cooperation process on the other hand. In order to achieve its own energy security, China must draft scientific international energy strategies while fully understanding current energy supply and demand relations and the development of international political and economic relations.

History, Status Quo and Problems of the Creation of Films with Themes of Significant Revolutions and Historical Events

During the process of contemporary Chinese film creation and production, the number of films with themes of significant revolutions and historical events is considerable and their influence is enormous. As a paradigm of reconstructing history, creations of films featuring significant revolutions and historical events emerge and boom in response to the new period, which have been closely related to and of great importance in China’s realistic politics, historical memories and national recognition over the past 30 years. Those films, through excavation and presentation of an important page in Chinese national history, at times appear as the carrier of shared imagination of Chinese nation, and at other times enhance the mainstream ideology. However,in the current audiencedominated era featuring media integration and rising marketization, it is far from enough to take account of such factors as correct political stand, mainstream ideology and commercial value to prevent revolutionary language from elapsing or vanishing from the public view. To tackle the transitional problem confronted by significant historical themes and their revolutionary language, we must add modernity construction and introspection while absorbing confidence and belief conducive to historical rationality and universal applicability.

Looking around Images—An Interpretation of Gilles Deleuze’s Image Classification Theory

    Abstract760)            Save
The key to understanding Deleuze’s film classification theory is to comprehend his philosophy of differentiation. In the light of this philosophy, Deleuze classifies film images into two categories: motion images and time images. As the two set of images are placed in differentiated thinking, images appear to be realistic and objective on one hand, and potential and subjective on the other. Rightly in the sense of attending to the two conflicting sides Deleuze develops his unique film image classification system, according to which images are basically classified on the principles of time and space. Nevertheless, the highly abstract philosophical propositions are hard to be integrated into reallife film images, not to say conduct effect “management”. It is evident that Deleuze establishes his own film theory system by taking account of documentary aesthetics while considering philosophical images. In view of this, the relations of classification is in some sense the relation between documentary aesthetics and philosophy, and the transition between the two is the result of subtle coordination between observation (or interpretive description) and philosophical thinking.

Situational Poetics: Another Route to Understanding Modern Poetry

The poetry since Song Dynasty has been characterized with the trend of routinization, localization and privatization to some degree. Zhuzhici of Qing Dynasty, poetry expressing longing for friends and loved ones, the compilation of collections like Nostalgic Collection, poetry in memory of the past and so on made the trend all the more obvious. Among them, enormous concomitant nonclassical poems have unique value hard to be explained by classical poetics. “Situational Poetics” in particular, which has been refined during the birth and development of poetry since the Song Dynasty, emphasizes psychic and livelihood levels, thus entrusting modern poetry with new meaning in terms of routinization, localization and privatization in concrete life situations. “Situational Poetics” not only points to modern poetry, but also works as an effective route to understanding nonclassical poetry through the ages.

“Poetic imagery theory” can by no means account for all features in poetry. This is particularly true when the tradition of onthespot recording and narration is emphasized in classical poetry, thus calling for a different interpretive tool. “Circumstanceoriented theory” gained gradual prominence after the brewing of poetics in Ming and Qing Dynasties and especially after the employment by figures like Weng Fanggang and Fang Dongshu. “Circumstanceoriented theory” reflects an important train of thought in classical poetics which highlights and reflects on “circumstance”, and address “circumstance” head on. Therefore, it is worthwhile to construct contemporary academic system of “circumstanceoriented theory” based on its development in classical poetics.

The paper elaborates on Yishan’s sevencharacter quatrains in narrative perspective in terms of time and space relations, narrative behavior, narrative style, poetic context, syntax and grammar, aiming at artistic evaluation. In Yishan’s sevencharacter quatrains, the narrative time and space features the intertwining of remoteness and closeness, the reflection of emptiness and concreteness, the contention of reality and imagination; The narrative style is characterized with subtleness, implicitness and intricacy; The narrative techniques include entangling plots, gradual mapping of structures and extricate suspense. All of this makes Yishan’s quatrains rich in contents and ideas with logic and deep feelings at extremely short length. By applying narrative analysis to Yishan’s quatrains which are praised as “flowing treasures with silk netlike constructions”, we can not only understand their poetic context, but also grasp the subtleness and development of poetic heart and poetic connotations. The introduction of narrative analysis of Chinese classical poetry is conducive to the return of its research to original literature studies and possibly in an indepth manner.

The Dual Construction of “Society” and “Corporation”——A Road Map for the Reform of Contemporary China’s Religious Policies and Management System

    Abstract752)            Save
The major management object in China’s religious management system is systematic management of ways of organized religious belief. The reform of China’s religious management system is undoubtedly to cut political intervention, shifting administrative management to social civil and public management, which should be regarded as the primary entry point. Therefore, the most practical and feasible reform program currently is the management of religious system according to the law, which is the only way to “social management” and “social government” of religious affairs. This should be the starting point for the reform of contemporary China’s religious policies and management system. Only when religious management modes and practicing ways of religious belief can take on socialized management modes without political intervention, can the legalization of religious management system become possible. This is the major crux of religious management. In view of this, to discuss China’s religious management problems, we have to sort out the ideological origins of policies, and meanwhile reason out the major contents of religious management system. We should stress the policy setting that belief difference does not mean political confrontation. Still more important, we should hold religious freedom and equality on the basis of rule of law.

From “Religious Freedom” to “Religious Engagement”: The New Turn of the Obama Administration′s International Religious Freedom Policy

The International Religious Freedom Act of 1998 has aimed at “international religious freedom” and been an important part of American foreign policy since its very beginning. However, the reality goes against its original good wishes regrettably: instead of promoting religious freedom and reducing religious prosecution, more harmful varieties have increased, i.e., religious terrorism and transnational terrorism. The root cause of the failure of “religious freedom policy” is that the whole perspective to understand and treat “religious freedom” is American. The founding of “Office of FaithBased Community Initiatives” marks the turn of U.S. attention from “religious freedom” to the emphasis on contacts with overseas religious leaders and organizations in order to promote sustainable development, more effective humanitarian assistance, pluralism and human rights including religious freedom. The shift from “religious freedom” to “religious engagement”, speaking of the course of development of U.S. international religious freedom policy, is not simply a change of personnel, but also a strategic adjustment made by the Obama Administration over the controversial U.S. international religious freedom policy.

The paper aims at analyzing the authenticity of documentary which has long been discussed but remained controversial. By defining fiction, nonfiction and film of presumptive assertion, the paper summarizes the range and methods of defining the authenticity of documentary. Concepts of presentation and representation are distinguished in the first place. They cannot be discerned by external features of texts such as style or media form. Even though presentation and representation can be discerned, they cannot be used to differentiate fiction and nonfiction. Just as the concept of documentary proposed by John Grieson, there is presentation in nonfiction and representation in fiction. The paper holds that only when the audience recognize the producer′s intension and make presumptive imagination, can fiction film be defined, and nonfiction can be defined vice verse. In view of this, documentary is film of presumptive assertions, producer′s intension and message resource index being an important basis of presumptive assertion.

Since the midnineties of the 20th century, the four elements of china′s urban filmsart, politics, capital and marginality have negotiated and compromised with one another centering on domestic and international “market”, leading to the topography of artistic film, mainstream film, entertainment film and independent film. Independent film, which is focused in this article, acquires the features of authenticity and marginality. Authenticity enables producers to follow urban realistic and documentary techniques, while marginality pursues truth and privileges, striving for lowbudget fiscal assistance from nongovernmental or overseas organizations. Those capital and political powers once hostile to independent films started to offer economic assistance selectively after the later period of the nineties. Different from their predecessors, the producers of new independent films since 1990s have developed an “ambiguous and symbiotic relationship” with power organs, commercial fashions and international artistic film market. They become elastic, avoiding confrontation with state system and capital so as not to be devoured by them. Urban realism, documentary techniques and evideos record the new reality and people in the bottom of society by flexibly employing “nonprofessional actors” and “professional nonactors”.

Youth films have currently become one of the hottest commercial film types in China′s film market. In the past few years, youth films surge in great number. Despite their difference in contents and styles, they share great similarities in narrative strategies and outlook on value. On the one hand, they sing highly of moral force, and resort to the emotional consolation through "healing" narrative mechanism and expressive style to comfort the youth whose souls are saturated with setbacks, troubles and confusions. On the other hand, these films affirm the materialistic life style and attitudes by exquisite visual and aural language to create magnificent, luxuriant metropolitan life images, demonstrating unconstrained materialistic desires for consumption in modern society. This has in a great degree impaired the intended emotional themes and caused avulsion and opposition in conveying value outlook.

It is well established that a vital characteristic of psychoanalysis is that it is not only an important means to curing a string of psychological diseases and disorders, but also a synthesizing theory in interpreting human being′s motives and behavior. However, if we put psychoanalysis under the context of overall thought development in the 20th century, it is not hard to detect that psychoanalysis seems to be the combination of scientific importance on one hand—being an instrument of scientific exploration of mindand humanistic value on the other—offering a profound theory of interpretation. The theory of humanistic interpretation is closely related to symptomatic reading in literary criticism, which helps reveal the “unconsciousness” in texts.

The linguistic analytical aesthetics based on Wittgenstein′s later thought is a method of aesthetics research worthy of excavation. It is a type of defensive aesthetics which holds suspicions of the general aesthetic statements originated from metaphysical aesthetics, and questions and negates latter′s general concepts through the method of linguistic analysis. Judging from the surface, it seems to dissolve aesthetics, but in effect it is not. The truth is that linguistic analysis aims at breaking general aesthetic statements, and does not lead to absolute deconstructionism. On the contrary, aesthetics gains rebirth on the basis of language use owing to linguistic analysis. Linguistic analytical aesthetics offers a new constructive direction for aesthetics and arts research, creating aesthetic grammar.

Marxist interests theory not only expounds that the pursuit of interests is the driving force of all social activities and interests relation is the core of all social relations, but also points out that interests relation is the logic starting point of ideological development, the basis of thought and the yardstick of value. At present, the loss of value regulation caused by interests conflicts in China′s transforming society is the biggest social risk and crisis demonstrated in the  following main features. Firstly, there is lack of ideological and institutional preparation for the trend of individualization and value pluralism. Secondly, there are still conceptual and ideological obstacles to the reform in the transforming society. Thirdly, there is lack of the principle of opportunity equality and procedural justice, which has become the root cause of social value crisis. Fourthly, newlyrising social groups appear as “subhealthy”, whose value inclination is severely unbalanced. Then, how to realize value consensus based on interests agreement so as to achieve the goal of common prosperity and harmonious society? The key lies in the following four aspects: first, transcending the mode of single value guidance and establishing the important position of interests guidance; second, emphasizing the value sequencing of reform and opening up; third, coordinating social interests appeal and value orientation; fourth, actively fostering civil awareness and vigorously developing social organizations.

Itamar EvanZohar’s polysystem theory has helped stake out the territory of translation studies that seeks to take a substantive “cultural turn” and focus on the target culture. Polysystem Theory has opened up new avenues of translation research, such as “rewriting theory” and “manipulation theory” brought forward by André Lefevere, Theo Hermans and Susan Bassnett. This paper argues, with the strengths and limitations of the above theories in observation, the sole use of any single theory cannot help a researcher achieve a fullscale and indepth study of translated literature. Rather, a comprehensive “systems theories” that integrates all the above theories should be constructed to meet the requirements of the studies of translated literature history. It elaborates on the way polysystem theory can be integrated, and significance of the integrated systems theories to the development of the studies of translated literature history.

France enacted the “Energy Transition Law for Green Growth” in 2014 in the context of its own economic and social development. The Energy Transition Law aims at equilibrium between economic growth and the protection of energy system and environment, setting up a model and a new direction for environmental law legislation. Given the current situation in China, the principle of “protection first” in the newly amended Environmental Protection Law need restrained interpretation, and legislation of environmental law should transfer to “regulation and promotion”. Among China′s legal system in response to climate change, “Lowcarbon Economy Promotion Law” should be the basic law. We recommend that it should be formulated as an economic law based on the logic of the development of lowcarbon industry with an integrated design of energy, architecture, transportation and financial policies.      Conflicts may arise between democratic politics and political equality in the era of network media. The causes of the conflicts lie in the fact that network media as a type of democratic technology contains two logics simultaneously: politics and market. The market logic is likely to erode and substitute the political logic, thus damaging political equality. Based on the empirical analysis of the data collected from the two cases: network media influence on public opinion and the rumor involving Red Crosses spread by web hypers, the paper expounds the possibilities that netizens be misled by network media which is manipulated by certain interest groups. Finally, strategies are proposed to ward off pitfalls of democratic politics in aspects of the relationships between political logic and market logic, between democratic technology and democratic values, between democratic value and political process.

    Abstract912)            Save
According to Francois Truffaut, the proposal of “film author” is to strengthen the “director personality”, i.e. bringing director′s individual ideas and designs into films. The theory of “film author” advanced with the rise and development of “the New Wave” film campaign and later on in its transmission grew into a film critic method or strategy, a new film theory and more than that, a new perspective in the historical studies of films. Yet the identification of the “film author” with the director as the singular author incurs critical reproach. We believe that since the day the “film author” was put forward, its concept and implication has been interpreted in comparison with literature author. However, the historical significance of “film author” theory to film has been neglected, as the negative effects are evident: the true connotation and significance of the “film author” theory is yet to be excavated, and even misinterpreted. We argue that a director is ostensibly regarded as a literature author according to the theory of “film author”, but between the lines it actually confirms the nature of film: it reveals the ontological property of film and liberates film radically from wordsdominated reading tradition, restoring the imagebased significance of film which as a technological invention has developed from entertainment “device” to narrative art, from silent to sound, from blackandwhite to colored over nearly 60 years

The relationship between the considerably booming comedy films and the social reality in China and other issues such as the realistic nature and realistic spirit of comedy films are without doubt worthy of indepth exploration and analysis. This paper, in the perspective of the “allegorization” of films, takes “reality textualization” and “theme allegorization” as the starting point, analyzes and expounds the artistic features of three representative subtypes of Chinese comedies and the relationship between allegorization and reality, concludes that comedy as an important type of film connects with reality, i.e. “links to the grassroots”, which is also a crucial reason why comedies are favored by audience and break box office records time again. Different types of comedies vary in reflecting reality or allegorizing in spite of some distortions and warps. Nevertheless, be it a black comedy which aims at value deconstruction and social stitching, or a metropolis love comedy which carries middle class′s dreams and imagination beyond reality, or a Fengstyled comedy which expresses secular concern, each presents allegorized images of “one or another type of reality” in China. Through the ideological analysis of functions of comedy films such as its allegorized expression of reality, healing by dreammaking and soul consolation to the social men, we can further understand the irremovable complicated relationship between comedies and the “entertainmentoriented” “era of grand comedies” on spiritual and cultural levels.

On the whole, the centennial research can be divided into four phases: the initial stage of taking first steps (1901—1919), the second stage of edging forward (1920—1953), the third stage of marching forward (1954—1981), and the fourth stage of rapid taking off (1982—2000). The achievement yield of the Tang Dynasty literature studies home and abroad in the 20th century has two major features. One is the unbalance of the achievement increase among different periods, taking the trend of early low and later high. In the first three periods, although the achievement yield increased gradually, the overall amount was still low, but in the last period of 1980s and 1990s, the yield took off dramatically. Secondly, the research hot issues take on the features of continuity and homoplasy on the one hand and differentiation on the other hand. From the time angle, since the studies of individual writers became popular in the 1920s and 1930s, the hot topics had been quite concentrated, focusing on Du Fu, Li Bai, Bai Juyi, Han Yu, Liu Zongyuan, Wangwei, Li He and Li Shangyin. From the angle of space, the research focus home and abroad is basically on some famous poets such as Du Fu, Li Bai, Bai Juyi, Han Yu, Liu Zongyuan, Wangwei, Li He, Li Shangyin, Liu Yuxi and Du Mu. But there were still differences: domestic scholars favored poet studies, while overseas scholars focused on both poets and novelists.

The Critical Studies of Charles Dickens in China (1904—2014)

    Abstract1059)            Save
The critical studies of Charles Dickens in China were characterized by the emergence of particular critical paradigms in different historical stages. As a consequence of being influenced by various foreign critical resources against the dominant political, social or cultural context in each stage, the critical paradigms have shifted from the traditional Chinese criticism, biological criticism, political criticism to the current multiple perspectives and approaches, which have replaced the ultraleftist criticism prevailing for long in the previous century. Compared with the AngloAmerican Dickens Industry in the past 180 years, the 110yearlong Chinese scholarship of Dickens remains neither profoundly impressive nor highly innovative, but extremely promising in future.

In the context of residents being atomized and communities being fragmented, the continuing growth of the urban grassroots social organizations is an important guarantee to innovate social management, improve public services, strengthen social construction and cultivate civil society. The growth of the urban grassroots social organizations can not be fully explained from a single perspective of rational choice theory, historical institutionalism theory or social capital theory. Therefore, it is necessary to construct a comprehensive explanatory framework of interestidentityinstitution on the basis of the integration of the three theories. The growth of urban grassroots social organizations is the process of residents′ collective participation and collaboration in community public affairs under the mixed mechanism of interests, identity and institution.

Historical Evolution and Realistic Enlightenment of Private Rights Soon After the Founding of the PRC

Journal of Shanghai University (Social Science Edition)    2015, 32 (3): 107-117.
    Abstract1221)            Save
During the early period after the founding of the PRC, the private capitalist economy gained development instead of being restrained or eliminated due to its benefits to national economy and people′s livelihood. Respecting, protecting and promoting individual economy and private capitalist economy which carry the content of the private rights was a critically precious step in exploring the right road to the transition to socialism. The activation of “private” elements by developing capitalist economy, cooperative economy and individual economy was the concrete embodiment of acknowledging and endowing all types of subjects with private rights. During the political revolutionary process from the new democratic society to socialist society, freezing out and depriving private rights was not destructing social objects but a type of reform. In the new historical period and development phase, respecting social subjects′ private rights and endowing them with due private rights again is not setting things right, but still a kind of reform. We cannot make a rash conclusion that China′s New Democratic Revolution is radical or untimely or that socialist reform is error correcting and regressive on the basis of the veneer that the reformist nature of both socialist revolution and socialist reform is to deprive and endow private rights. Both the New Democratic Revolution which is political revolution and China′s socialist reform which is social revolution made great contribution to the progress of social productivity, the increase of China′s national comprehensive strength and the improvement of people′s wellbeing, thus going down in history and setting up historical exemplars and offering realistic enlightenment for future development and reform.

    CHA Can-Chang, MENG Ru
Journal of Shanghai University (Social Science Edition)    2015, 32 (3): 118-128.
    Abstract480)            Save
Due to the absence of legislation targeting new media advertising, the advertising industry based on new technology platforms like the internet and mobile phones has been loosely regulated since its emergence, thus gaining the momentum of rapid development. However, some new media advertisers lack selfdiscipline awareness, leading to the abuse of information free transmission rights, rampant spreading of fake ads, junk ads and porn ads and severe infringements on consumer rights. With the increase of netizen population and their enhanced discourse capability, their sustained supervision over new media advertising is forming an important fourth power, working together with government rules and regulations, the internal management of new media advertising releasing platforms and self discipline within the industry to push forward advertisers and ad agencies to enhance their sense of social responsibility and professional ethics, and to supervise and direct the new media advertising industry toward the regulated road of sound development.

Its voice transforms from the initial inexperienced, sporadic and less matured slogans, speeches, banners and political essays into systematic, complete and maturing Marxismdominated discourse system with Chinese characteristics. By tracing the tracks of the evolution of the CPC′s discourse system, this paper aims at expounding and analyzing discourse changes in relation to its environment, finding out the impetus to discourse change and development, charting the direction for future adjustment and development while sticking to the current discourse system and exploring issues of discourse elaboration, its reform and development in the allmedia as well as globalization era.
