Abstract: While the fiction genre can be considered as the groupfiction aggregation, which is not only characteristic of the stated historical continuity in time and the stated scope size in quality but also features such unique aesthetics that the readers have a steady expectation and a good taste, the genre fiction can also be looked upon as the fictional mode that consists of definite historical periods, steady formsandcontents, and series of exampled works. Since the inception of the Chinese modern fiction, many critics and writers have shown their concern on the fiction genre theory and some research for it has been done. After entering into the "new period", with the "stratification of the Chinese society", China has witnessed a rising of the "formularization of the fiction creation". Going further to research for the fiction genre theory and develop its critical practice conforms to the requirements of both deepening into the understanding of the history of the Chinese modern fiction and adapting to the current trend of the formularization of the fiction creation. The research scope includes: fiction classification, genre evolution, relation and hierarchy, critical practice, etc. At present, it is necessary to start from many ways such as synthesis, system, originality and practice.
Key words: fiction genre, fiction genre theory, fiction genre study, fiction
