From Four Theories to Theory of Dewesternization: the Evolution of Comparative Media Studies

Abstract: By comprehensively reviewing the historical and social context of all theories, and by using interdisciplinary perspective to explore semantic and pragmatic meanings of key concepts, the paper compares the crucial theoretical results in media system. By comprehensive theoretical analysis, the following conclusions are arrived at: that Four Theories, the Social Responsibility in particular, does not deny, but rather saves and consolidates American core value of freedom, democracy, and individualism; that freedom in general is not a simple and static concept, but one with complicated connotation and history; that Four Theories of the Press, like an academic generator, greatly enlightens the later research; that academic discourse rights is to be used modestly.
