Abstract: The Book of Songs not only depicts miserable “starvelings” and bitter “laborers” but also portrays affectionate “lovers”. This essay, based on the researches of earlier scholars, makes a probe into the poems of the Zheng Ballads, the concept of the“Zheng songs” and the meaning of “obscene” in the “Zheng songs are obscene”. He concludes that Confucius’“Zheng songs are obscene” means “Zheng songs are excessive”, that has nothing with “obscene”. Also he thinks that the emotion of the “Zheng songs” is inclined to the “love expression”. From the above-mentioned, Confucius’ poetic view can be seen that he emphasizes both ceremony and emotion.
Key words: obscene, love poem, meaning, Zheng song
