Abstract:  Performance is an important gauge of the channels of innovation. Based on panel data of provincial high-tech industry, this paper analyzes the contributions of four channels of scientific and technological input to innovation output, namely, enterprises’ self R&D input, the import of foreign technology, the introduction of domestic technologies and equipment upgrading and transformation by using Sys-GMM and Quantile Regression Models. The results show enterprises’ self R&D input yields highest contribution, the import of foreign technology ranks the second, while equipment upgrading and transformation ranks the last. The combination of self R&D input with foreign technology importing yields better results in those enterprises with high technologies. The introduction of domestic technologies makes significant contribution in those areas with the highest level of scientific and technological output while the overall contribution of R&D staff is comparatively low and turns out to be worse with the increase of scientific and technological output, indicating comparatively poor performance of R& D staff in those areas with high level of scientific and technological output.

Key words: high-tech industry, enterprises&rsquo, self R&D input, introducing technology, equipment upgrading and transformation, performance
