The Modernity of the Shanghai Cinema in 1930s and 1940s

Abstract: By reexamining 20 films in varying degrees, this essay accounts for the fact that the Shanghai cinema in 1930s and 1940s has a large quantity of excellent films and wellknown stars. Thus it embodies the deep modernity of keeping a simultaneous development with the world's advanced culture.
