Abstract:

Chinese sports films, with a history spanning over a century, have portrayed a range of female images that not only reflect the social and historical contexts in which they emerged, but also demonstrate varying degrees of agency and subjectivity. In these cinematic representations, the female body constitutes a thematic thread laden with complex meanings. By examining relevant historical documents, one can discern the heterogeneity and complexity flowing beneath the surface of these portrayals, thus expanding and enriching our existing understanding of female representations in sports cinema. Throughout the historical trajectory in which the subjective consciousness of female images in sports films has evolved from nascence to maturity, the gender discourse centered on the body has maintained a dynamic tension with political discourse. This interplay has shaped a dialectical form of discourse unique to these representations.
